Everything You Need to Know Before Buying a Shore Jigging Reel
Choosing the right reel is one of the most important decisions you’ll make as a shore jigging angler. While many anglers spend countless hours comparing rods and jigs, the reel is often selected based on price, brand or a few impressive numbers printed on the box.
That approach can easily lead to disappointment.
A reel that feels perfect in a tackle shop may become uncomfortable after several hours of casting, struggle under heavy loads or simply fail to balance your rod properly.
The truth is that there is no such thing as the perfect shore jigging reel.
There is only the perfect reel for your style of fishing.
The ideal reel depends on several factors working together:
- the rod you use
- the weight of your jigs
- the depth you fish
- the species you target
- your preferred fishing technique
- and, perhaps most importantly, how balanced your entire setup feels in your hands.
Over the years I’ve tested different combinations while fishing the rocky coastline of the Adriatic Sea. Some performed brilliantly. Others taught me valuable lessons after lost fish, broken leaders or simply long days spent using equipment that wasn’t suited to the conditions.
Every one of those experiences helped shape the recommendations you’ll find in this guide.
Rather than focusing on marketing claims or brand loyalty, this article explains the principles behind choosing the right reel. Once you understand those principles, selecting the correct reel becomes much easier—regardless of which manufacturer you prefer.
Start by Understanding Your Fishing
Before comparing reel sizes, gear ratios or drag figures, ask yourself one simple question:
What kind of fishing will I actually be doing?
It sounds obvious, yet it’s a step many anglers skip.
Instead of buying the reel that someone else recommends, start by understanding your own fishing.
Ask yourself:
- How deep will I normally fish?
- Which species am I targeting?
- What jig weights will I use most often?
- Which PE line will I fish with?
- Which rod will the reel be paired with?
Your answers should determine every decision that follows.
Someone casting a 40 g jig into relatively shallow water has completely different requirements from an angler working a 120 g jig over 70 metres of water while targeting large amberjack.
Both are shore jigging.
Both require quality equipment.
But they certainly don’t require the same reel.
One of the most common mistakes beginners make is buying a larger reel “just to be safe.”
Bigger isn’t always better.
A reel that is too large adds unnecessary weight, upsets the balance of the rod and makes fishing more tiring throughout the day.
The goal is balance—not size.
Every part of your setup should complement the others:
- Rod
- Reel
- Braided line
- Leader
- Jig
When those five components work together, you’ll cast farther, work the jig more efficiently, reduce fatigue and enjoy fighting fish far more than with an unbalanced setup.
A well-balanced setup will always outperform expensive equipment that doesn’t match.
Understanding Reel Sizes
Walk into any tackle shop and you’ll immediately see spinning reels labelled with numbers such as:
- 4000
- 5000
- 6000
- 8000
- 10000
- 14000
Most anglers naturally assume these numbers follow one universal standard.
They don’t.
In fact, this is probably one of the biggest misconceptions in fishing.
A size 6000 reel from one manufacturer can easily be physically larger than an 8000 from another.
Some manufacturers build several reel sizes on exactly the same body, changing only the spool size. Others redesign both the body and spool as the reel size increases.
Because of this, comparing reels purely by their size number is often misleading.
Instead, compare the specifications that actually affect performance:
- Weight
- Spool capacity
- Maximum drag
- Gear ratio
- Line retrieval per handle turn
- Body construction
- Intended application
These specifications tell you far more than the number printed on the spool.
Never buy a reel simply because it says “10000.” Buy it because its specifications suit your fishing.
Choosing the Correct Reel Size
Rather than asking:
“What is the best reel size for shore jigging?”
Ask yourself:
“What job do I need this reel to perform?”
That small change in thinking usually leads to a much better decision.
Different fishing situations require different tools, and reel size should always reflect the conditions rather than personal preference.
Size 4000
Although many anglers associate shore jigging with large, heavy reels, there are situations where a 4000-size reel makes perfect sense.
A quality 4000 reel performs exceptionally well when paired with:
- Light rods
- Thin braided lines
- Smaller jigs
- Light spinning techniques
Typical target species include:
- Sea bass
- Needlefish
- Mackerel
- Smaller bonito
- Other inshore predators
The biggest advantage is obvious the moment you pick it up.
It’s light.
Less weight means less fatigue, especially during long sessions involving hundreds of casts.
However, that advantage also comes with limitations.
Compared to larger reels, a typical 4000 generally offers:
- Lower spool capacity
- Smaller drive gears
- Less mechanical strength
- Reduced ability to handle prolonged heavy loads
That doesn’t make it a bad reel.
It simply means it has a different purpose.
Expecting a lightweight 4000 reel to perform like a heavy-duty offshore reel isn’t realistic.
Choose it for the situations it was designed for, and it will perform exceptionally well.
Size 5000–6000
For many anglers, this is where dedicated shore jigging really begins.
Personally, I consider a strong 6000 reel one of the most versatile options available.
Matched with rods rated around 20–80 g, it offers an excellent balance between:
- Power
- Weight
- Comfort
- Line capacity
- Versatility
Depending on the manufacturer and rod design, some 30–100 g rods also balance beautifully with a quality 6000 reel.
Typical target species include:
- Dentex
- Little tunny
- Bonito
- Barracuda
- Smaller amberjack
For many anglers fishing the Adriatic Sea, a 6000 reel becomes the setup that spends the most time in their hands.
If I could only own one shore jigging reel for medium applications, this would probably be the category I’d choose.
Size 8000
Once jig weights increase and larger fish become a realistic possibility, an 8000 reel starts making much more sense.
Compared with a typical 6000, it generally provides:
- Increased line capacity
- More powerful gearing
- Greater body rigidity
- Improved drag consistency
- Better control during long fights
For rods rated around 30–100 g, I often recommend considering a strong 8000 reel, particularly when fishing rough terrain or areas known for larger fish.
One important detail is worth remembering.
Not every 8000 reel is physically large.
Some manufacturers build surprisingly compact 8000 reels, while others produce models that feel considerably bigger.
This is another reason why comparing specifications is always more useful than comparing the number printed on the spool.
Size 10000
Whenever I know I’ll be fishing water between approximately 40 and 80 metres deep, using heavy jigs and with a realistic chance of hooking powerful fish, I normally move towards a 10000 reel.
Depth alone isn’t the reason.
It’s the combination of several demanding factors:
- Long casts
- Heavy jigs
- Strong currents
- Powerful fish
- Long initial runs
Imagine making a 70-metre cast.
Your jig sinks another 60 metres.
The fish immediately takes another 80 metres on its first run.
You’ve suddenly used well over 200 metres of braided line.
That’s exactly why spool capacity becomes so important.
Besides holding more line, a typical 10000 reel also offers:
- A larger spool diameter
- Greater winding power
- Better control under heavy load
- Increased confidence during long fights
Personally, I like pairing a 10000 reel with rods rated around 60–150 g when fishing heavier shore jigging setups.
For the type of fishing I do, this combination has consistently proven reliable.
Size 14000
Many anglers believe that choosing the biggest reel automatically gives them the best chance of landing big fish.
In reality, that’s rarely the case.
A 14000 reel should only be chosen when your fishing genuinely demands it—not simply because it looks more powerful.
Situations where a 14000 reel makes sense include:
- Fishing deep water with heavy jigs
- Using PE4 or PE5 braided line
- Targeting large pelagic species
- Fishing in strong current
- Expecting long, powerful runs from fish
Depending on the manufacturer, the difference between a 10000 and a 14000 reel may only be the spool size. In other cases, both the spool and body become noticeably larger.
Again, there is no universal standard.
This is why comparing specifications is always more important than comparing model numbers.
A heavy 14000 reel mounted on a light shore jigging rod usually creates an outfit that feels unbalanced and tiring to fish with.
Choose a 14000 because your fishing requires the additional capacity and power—not because the larger number seems more impressive.
Matching the Reel to the Rod
One of the biggest mistakes I see anglers make is buying the reel first and then trying to find a rod that fits it.
I recommend doing exactly the opposite.
Choose the rod first.
Then choose the reel that balances it correctly.
Your rod determines:
- The jig weights you’ll fish
- The PE line you’ll use
- The size of fish the setup is designed to handle
- The overall balance of your outfit
The reel should complement those characteristics—not fight against them.
As a general starting point, I recommend:

These recommendations aren’t strict rules.
Rod power ratings vary considerably between manufacturers, and two rods with the same printed casting weight can feel completely different in your hands.
Whenever possible, mount the reel on the rod before buying it.
Hold the outfit exactly as you would while fishing.
Ask yourself:
- Does it feel balanced?
- Does the rod naturally rest in my hand?
- Does the tip feel excessively heavy?
- Would I enjoy casting and jigging with this setup for eight hours?
Those answers are often worth far more than any specification printed in a catalogue.
The best setup isn’t necessarily the lightest one—it’s the one that feels perfectly balanced in your hands.
Reel Weight
Weight is one of the first specifications anglers compare.
Naturally, everyone likes lighter equipment.
However, lighter doesn’t automatically mean better.
Manufacturers often reduce weight by removing material, making components smaller or using lighter construction.
While this can produce an impressively light reel, it doesn’t always create the strongest one.
For dedicated shore jigging, I value durability and balance more than saving a few grams.
Personally, I have no problem fishing with reels weighing up to approximately 750 grams, provided they balance the rod correctly.
Many anglers are surprised when they discover that a slightly heavier reel actually feels lighter once it’s mounted on a long shore jigging rod.
Why?
Because balance matters more than weight.
If a reel is too light, the rod becomes tip-heavy.
Your wrist constantly fights that imbalance throughout the day.
After several hours of casting and jigging, that extra fatigue becomes very noticeable.
A properly balanced outfit feels almost effortless to fish with, even if the reel itself weighs a little more.
Never judge a reel by holding it in your hand.
Always judge it while mounted on the rod you’ll actually use.
Understanding Spool Capacity
One specification that beginners often underestimate is spool capacity.
Fishing in 60 metres of water doesn’t mean you only need 60 metres of braid.
Several factors consume line during every cast:
- Casting distance
- Water depth
- Line angle
- Current
- The fish’s first run
- A comfortable safety reserve
Let’s look at a realistic example.
You make a 70-metre cast.
Your jig sinks another 60 metres.
A powerful amberjack immediately takes another 80 metres during its first run.
You’ve already used more than 200 metres of line—and the fight has only just begun.
This is exactly why spool capacity matters.
Running out of braid is one of the easiest mistakes to avoid.
Choosing a reel with sufficient capacity gives you confidence, allows you to fight fish properly and removes unnecessary stress from the situation.
The larger spool offers another important advantage.
Because of its greater diameter, line leaves the spool more efficiently and is generally retrieved more effectively during the retrieve.
Spool size influences much more than simply how much braid fits on the reel.
It also affects the overall performance of the setup.
Always choose enough line capacity for the worst-case scenario, not the average one.
Gear Ratio Explained
Once you’ve chosen the right reel size, the next specification to understand is the gear ratio.
Unfortunately, it’s also one of the most misunderstood.
Many anglers assume that a higher gear ratio automatically means a better reel.
It doesn’t.
Gear ratio simply tells you how many times the rotor rotates during one complete turn of the handle.
For example:
- 9:1 means the rotor rotates approximately 4.9 times.
- 7:1 means it rotates approximately 5.7 times.
- 2:1 means it rotates approximately 6.2 times.
In simple terms:
- Lower gear ratio = slower retrieve with greater mechanical advantage.
- Higher gear ratio = faster retrieve with less mechanical advantage.
That’s all the gear ratio tells you.
It does not tell you how much line the reel actually retrieves.
And that’s where many anglers make their first mistake.
Line Retrieval Is Even More Important Than Gear Ratio
If I compare two reels, I almost always look at line retrieval per handle turn before I even look at the gear ratio.
Why?
Because line retrieval tells me what I’ll actually feel while fishing.
Manufacturers usually state it as:
- 95 cm per turn
- 105 cm per turn
- 115 cm per turn
- 125 cm per turn
These numbers immediately tell you how much braid is collected every time you turn the handle.
That’s much more useful than knowing whether the reel has a 5.1:1 or a 5.7:1 gear ratio.
Two reels may have very similar gear ratios but retrieve completely different amounts of line.
Always compare both specifications together:
- Gear ratio
- Line retrieved per handle turn
Neither one tells the whole story on its own.
Why Spool Diameter Matters
So why can two reels with identical gear ratios retrieve different amounts of line?
The answer is simple.
Spool diameter.
A larger spool collects more line during each rotation than a smaller one.
Think of two bicycle wheels.
If both wheels make one full rotation, the larger wheel travels farther.
Exactly the same principle applies to fishing reels.
This is why a larger reel with a lower gear ratio can sometimes retrieve more line per handle turn than a smaller reel with a higher gear ratio.
Another detail many anglers overlook is that line retrieval changes throughout the fight.
As line leaves the spool, the effective spool diameter becomes smaller.
The reel therefore retrieves slightly less line with every turn of the handle.
This is perfectly normal and another reason why maintaining sufficient spool capacity is so important.
Never judge retrieve speed by gear ratio alone.
Understanding PG, HG and XG
Most modern spinning reels include additional letters after the model name.
The most common are:
- PG
- HG
- XG
Some manufacturers use:
- P
- H
- XH
Although the naming differs slightly between brands, they all describe the same thing:
The speed of the reel’s transmission.
Let’s look at what each one actually means.
PG (Power Gear)
Power Gear reels use a lower gear ratio.
Their purpose isn’t maximum speed.
Their purpose is efficiency under heavy load.
For shore jigging, this provides several important advantages:
- Greater winding power
- Less effort retrieving heavy jigs
- Better control in deep water
- Reduced fatigue throughout the day
- Better leverage during long fights
Imagine spending eight hours retrieving a 100 g jig from depths of 50 to 70 metres.
You’ll quickly notice the difference between forcing a fast reel to do the work and allowing a slower transmission to do much of it for you.
For my style of dedicated shore jigging, PG is my personal preference.
Not because it’s universally better.
Simply because it suits the way I fish.
HG (High Gear)
High Gear reels retrieve more line with every turn of the handle.
They’re an excellent choice when:
- Fishing shallower water
- Mixing shore jigging with spinning
- Working lighter jigs
- Fishing faster retrieves
- Recovering slack line quickly
HG is probably the most versatile option for anglers who use one setup for several different techniques.
The compromise is straightforward.
As retrieval speed increases, winding heavy jigs generally requires a little more effort.
For many anglers, that’s a trade-off they’re happy to make.
XG (Extra High Gear)
Extra High Gear reels are built for speed.
They’re designed to recover as much line as possible with every turn of the handle.
They excel when fishing:
- Stickbaits
- Poppers
- Surface lures
- Fast-moving pelagic species
- High-speed spinning techniques
A fast reel can also be useful when a fish suddenly charges towards you and you need to recover slack line immediately.
However, maximum speed isn’t always an advantage.
Retrieving a heavy jig from 60 metres of water with an extremely fast reel usually requires noticeably more effort than retrieving the same jig with a Power Gear model.
This is why choosing the correct transmission depends entirely on the type of fishing you do most often.
Power Versus Speed
Every reel is a compromise.
A slower transmission gives you more mechanical advantage.
A faster transmission gives you greater retrieve speed.
A simple way to understand this is to think about riding a bicycle.
Climbing a steep hill in a low gear feels easier because you gain mechanical advantage.
Riding on a flat road in a high gear allows you to travel faster, but every pedal stroke requires more effort.
Fishing reels work in exactly the same way.
For dedicated shore jigging, I personally prefer the extra control and reduced fatigue offered by a Power Gear reel.
For spinning and surface fishing, I generally choose a High Gear reel because faster line recovery becomes more important.
Neither option is universally better.
They’re simply designed for different jobs.
My Practical Recommendations
If someone asked me which transmission I’d choose for different techniques, my answer would be very simple.
Dedicated Shore Jigging
My choice: PG (Power Gear)
Why?
Because I spend most of the day retrieving relatively heavy jigs from considerable depths.
The additional winding power makes the entire day noticeably less tiring.
Shore Jigging Combined with Spinning
My choice: HG (High Gear)
If I’m switching between shore jigging and faster lure presentations, HG offers an excellent balance between power and speed.
It’s probably the most versatile option for anglers who enjoy multiple techniques.
Surface Fishing with Stickbaits and Poppers
My choice: HG or XG
Surface fishing often benefits from faster line recovery.
Being able to pick up slack quickly helps maintain better lure control and improves hook-setting when fish strike aggressively.
These aren’t universal rules.
They’re simply the combinations that have consistently worked best for me over many years fishing the Adriatic coastline.
As you gain experience, you’ll develop your own preferences.
That’s completely normal.
The important thing is understanding why you’re choosing a particular transmission—not simply copying someone else’s setup.
Handle Length Matters More Than Most Anglers Realise
Gear ratio isn’t the only factor affecting winding power.
Handle length plays an equally important role.
A longer handle provides greater leverage, making it easier to retrieve heavy jigs and apply pressure during a fight.
For dedicated shore jigging, I prefer:
- A rigid screw-in handle
- Minimal handle play
- A longer handle arm
- A large, comfortable handle knob
- A secure grip, even with wet hands
These details may seem insignificant when you’re standing in a tackle shop.
After eight hours of continuous jigging, they become impossible to ignore.
Cadence Is More Important Than Maximum Speed
One of the biggest misconceptions in shore jigging is that success comes from retrieving the jig as quickly as possible.
It doesn’t.
Successful shore jigging is built on rhythm.
Depending on the conditions, your retrieve may include:
- Long lifts
- Sharp jerks
- Slow mechanical lifts
- Fast accelerations
- Long pauses
- Controlled slack line
Your reel should allow you to perform those movements naturally.
If the reel is too fast, maintaining precise jig control becomes more difficult.
If it’s too slow, recovering slack line can become inefficient.
The best reel isn’t the fastest one.
It’s the one that allows you to fish comfortably, consistently and confidently throughout the entire day.
Good shore jigging isn’t about maximum speed. It’s about complete control.
Choosing a Reel Built for Saltwater
Selecting the right reel size and transmission is only part of the decision.
The reel itself must also be capable of handling one of the harshest environments in fishing.
Saltwater is unforgiving.
Every trip exposes your equipment to:
- Salt spray
- Humidity
- Sand
- Fine dust
- Heavy drag pressure
- Continuous retrieves
- Powerful fish
Even a high-quality reel can suffer premature wear if it wasn’t designed for demanding saltwater use.
Many manufacturers produce reels advertised as “saltwater resistant.” While these reels may perform well for occasional use, dedicated shore jigging places far greater stress on every internal component.
For this reason, I always recommend choosing a reel specifically designed for demanding saltwater applications.
Different manufacturers use different names and technologies, so don’t focus on marketing terms alone.
Instead, look at how the reel is actually built.
A Strong Body Matters More Than Bearing Count
One of the biggest misconceptions in fishing is that more bearings automatically mean a better reel.
It sounds convincing.
Ten bearings must be better than six.
Right?
Not necessarily.
For shore jigging, body rigidity is far more important than the number of bearings.
During a fight, enormous pressure passes through the handle, drive gear, pinion gear and spool shaft.
If the body flexes under load, the internal gears no longer mesh perfectly.
Over time this may result in:
- Rougher operation
- Increased wear
- Reduced winding efficiency
- Shorter reel life
A rigid body keeps every component aligned, allowing the reel to perform smoothly even under heavy pressure.
I’d rather own a reel with fewer high-quality bearings and a strong body than one with many bearings but a weaker construction.
Strength always comes before bearing count.
Internal Gears
The gears are the heart of every spinning reel.
Every turn of the handle transfers force through them.
The heavier the jig, the deeper the water and the stronger the fish, the greater the load placed on those gears.
A quality shore jigging reel should use gears built to withstand repeated heavy pressure without developing excessive play or losing smoothness.
Large drive gears generally distribute force more efficiently than very compact ones.
This is one of the reasons why undersized reels often struggle when used outside their intended purpose.
The reel may survive.
But it won’t perform as efficiently—or last as long.
The Main Shaft
Another component that rarely receives attention is the main shaft.
It supports the spool while transferring heavy loads throughout the reel.
Under extreme pressure, a stronger shaft helps maintain alignment and smooth operation.
If excessive flex develops, overall performance gradually deteriorates.
Like many internal components, it’s something you’ll probably never notice during the first few fishing trips.
You’ll notice it after years of heavy use.
That’s when build quality really starts to separate premium reels from average ones.
The Drag System
Ask anglers what they look at first when buying a reel and many will answer:
“The maximum drag.”
Twenty kilograms.
Twenty-five kilograms.
Thirty kilograms.
While impressive on paper, maximum drag is rarely the most important characteristic.
What matters far more is how the drag performs.
A quality drag should:
- Start smoothly
- Remain consistent throughout the fight
- Dissipate heat effectively
- Allow precise adjustments
- Release line without sticking or surging
A smooth drag protects every part of your setup:
- Rod
- Braided line
- Leader
- Knots
- Hooks
- Solid rings
Personally, I’d always choose a reel with a beautifully smooth drag over one that simply advertises the highest drag figure.
A fish doesn’t care what number is printed in the catalogue.
Your equipment only performs as well as its weakest point.
Never Fish with a Fully Locked Drag
One mistake I occasionally see is anglers tightening the drag as much as possible before they start fishing.
That approach usually creates more problems than it solves.
Your reel isn’t the only component under pressure.
Every part of your setup has its own breaking point:
- Rod
- Braided line
- Leader
- Knots
- Hooks
- Solid rings
The drag should work together with those components—not against them.
A properly adjusted drag cushions sudden runs, absorbs shock and dramatically increases your chances of landing powerful fish.
Fishing with a completely locked drag removes that protection.
More pressure doesn’t always mean more control.
Very often, it means exactly the opposite.
The Line Roller
The line roller is one of the smallest components on a spinning reel.
It’s also one of the most important.
Every metre of braided line passes across it.
If the roller stops rotating freely, friction increases immediately.
That can lead to:
- Premature braid wear
- Line twist
- Reduced casting performance
- Faster line damage
Before every trip, I spend just a few seconds checking:
- Does it rotate freely?
- Does it feel rough?
- Is there any salt build-up?
Those few seconds can prevent expensive problems later.
The Bail Arm
A reliable bail arm is something most anglers never think about—until it fails.
Always check that it:
- Opens smoothly
- Closes positively
- Locks securely
A worn or damaged bail spring can close unexpectedly during a cast.
Best case?
You lose an expensive jig.
Worst case?
You damage your rod.
It’s a small component that deserves regular attention.
The Handle
Every bit of power you generate passes through the handle.
For heavy shore jigging, I personally look for:
- A rigid screw-in handle
- Minimal play
- A comfortable handle knob
- Enough leverage for heavy retrieves
- A secure grip with wet hands
These details may seem insignificant inside a tackle shop.
After an entire day working heavy jigs, they become surprisingly important.
Comfort reduces fatigue.
Reduced fatigue allows you to fish better.
Reel Maintenance
Even the best reel won’t survive poor maintenance.
Saltwater is incredibly aggressive.
Fortunately, basic maintenance is simple.
After every trip I recommend:
- Gently rinse the reel with fresh water
- Never use high-pressure water
- Dry it with a soft cloth
- Loosen the drag before storage
- Store it somewhere dry
Regular servicing also plays a major role in extending a reel’s lifespan.
Taking care of your equipment is always cheaper than replacing it.
A well-maintained reel can perform beautifully for many years.
Why I Always Carry Two Spare Spools
This is one habit I’ve never changed.
Whenever I go shore jigging, I carry two spare spools.
Why?
Because problems rarely happen at convenient times.
A spare spool allows me to react immediately if:
- My braid becomes damaged
- I lose a significant amount of line
- A severe wind knot develops
- Conditions suddenly change
- I want to switch to a different PE line
One spool may carry a lighter braid for everyday fishing.
Another may be loaded with a heavier setup for deeper water or larger fish.
Some anglers see spare spools as optional.
I see them as insurance.
When you’ve travelled hundreds of kilometres, climbed difficult cliffs and finally reached an incredible fishing spot, a damaged braid shouldn’t end your day.
Common Mistakes When Buying a Reel
Over the years I’ve seen the same mistakes repeated again and again.
Fortunately, they’re all easy to avoid.
The most common ones include:
- Buying the biggest reel instead of the right reel
- Choosing only by maximum drag
- Ignoring rod balance

My Personal Recommendations
Every angler eventually develops personal preferences.
These are mine after many years of shore jigging along the Adriatic coastline.
Light Setup
- Rod: approximately 20–80 g
- Reel: 6000
- PE: around PE2–PE2.5
- Jig: 40–80 g
Medium Setup
- Rod: approximately 30–100 g
- Reel: Strong 6000 or 8000
- PE: PE3–PE3.5
- Jig: 60–100 g
Heavy Setup
- Rod: approximately 60–150 g
- Reel: 10000
- PE: PE4 or PE5 when conditions require it
- Jig: 100 g and heavier
When I know I’ll be fishing approximately 40–80 metres deep, using heavy jigs and there’s a realistic chance of hooking powerful fish, I usually choose a 10000, or even a 14000 if additional line capacity is beneficial.
For dedicated shore jigging, I personally prefer Power Gear (PG or P) because it provides better control and makes repeatedly retrieving heavy jigs noticeably easier.
When combining shore jigging with spinning, I generally prefer High Gear (HG or H).
For stickbaits, poppers and other surface lures, HG or XG usually offers the best balance between lure control and fast line recovery.
These aren’t universal rules.
They’re simply the combinations that have consistently worked best for me.
Final Thoughts
Choosing the right shore jigging reel isn’t about buying the most expensive model or the reel with the biggest numbers.
It’s about understanding your fishing.
The more you understand:
- Reel size
- Rod balance
- Gear ratio
- Line retrieval
- Spool capacity
- Body construction
- Drag performance
…the easier it becomes to build a setup that truly works.
Specifications are important.
Experience is even more important.
Every fishing trip teaches something.
Every lost fish teaches something.
Every successful fight teaches something.
Use those experiences to improve your equipment, refine your technique and continue learning.
At the end of the day, the best reel isn’t the one with the highest specifications.
It’s the one that gives you complete confidence every time you step onto the rocks.
